Reproductive Services
For the Concerned Breeder

Northgate Animal Hospital offers comprehensive reproductive services, including genetic counseling and breeding soundness exams. Other services include:

• Semen collection and evaluation
• Hormone level measurement (progesterone, LH)
• Vaginal insemination
• Artificial insemination using fresh, fresh-chilled, and frozen semen
• Insemination techniques, including vaginal, surgical, and transcervical insemination (TCI)
• PennHIP radiology and OFA evaluation
• Brucellosis testing

A valuable service available to breeders is the breeding soundness exam. This exam allows us to assess your stud’s potential breeding fitness. Areas evaluated include:

• Scrotal size, shape, and consistency
• Sperm motility and morphology
• Penis shape and size
• Body condition and overall health

Our general fitness exam for potential breeding females is recommended, as well, including assessment of diet, reproductive organ health, and overall vigor.

For breeding quality and optimization, we offer artificial insemination services through the use of either fresh or frozen semen. Meet with our reproductive counselor to determine your needs and to develop a reproductive service plan.

Pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound has several advantages, including:

• Pregnancy diagnosed early in gestation
• Fetal sexing
• Twins more precisely diagnosed
• Detailed information about fetal health and viability

The technology of reproductive ultrasound is non-invasive, minimizes discomfort, is safe throughout gestation, and is relatively low in cost, making it an excellent tool for the veterinarian and breeder.
